Beth and Jeff Blumenkrantz hit the studio late last year to record the brand-new concept album for Regretting Almost Everything, an intimate, two-person musical about a middle-aged couple who love each other and their kids but can’t quite seem to find the passion in their marriage any longer.
With a book and lyrics by Lauren Taslitz and a score by Danny Ursetti, Regretting Almost Everything has been in the making for over five years. Following its world premiere at the Barrington Stage Company in 2017, the show was also staged in New York City in 2018. In the intervening years, Taslitz and Ursetti expanded the show into a full two-person musical.
“I find such joy and passion in Lauren and Danny’s beautiful work,” says Beth. “To give voice to Anne, this sexy, wild, middle-aged mother! To watch her grow and love and grieve. To sing Danny's melodies and personalize Lauren's lyrics. It's why I became an actor. I have fallen in love with Anne.”
“What I love about Danny and Lauren's songs is how performable they are,” says Jeff. “Lauren's lyrics strike a perfect balance between humanity and wit and theatricality. And Danny’s music is, by turns, sensitive and incisive and fun, but always tasty/hooky. They're great storytellers, and it's a privilege to get to sing their songs.”
“It's so gratifying to hear the recording as a whole,” he adds. “It’s rare for a musical's story to center a mature woman, and Lauren has captured that voice brilliantly. And then with the incomparable Beth Leavel hitting all those songs out of the park? Heaven! Also, Danny’s wonderful orchestrations take the already great music to a whole new level!”
The concept album, featuring 15 songs and a bonus track, is now available on all music streaming platforms.
