🎧: ‘How Do You Measure A Marriage’ (Acoustic) Out Now!

Beth performs a new acoustic version of How Do You Measure A Marriage? from Regretting Almost Everything - out now on all music streaming platforms!

Beth and the creative team of new concept album Regretting Almost Everything returned to the studio to record a new acoustic version of How Do You Measure A Marriage?.

With a book and lyrics by Lauren Taslitz and a score by Danny Ursetti, Regretting Almost Everything is an intimate, two-person musical about a middle-aged couple who love each other and their kids but can’t quite seem to find the passion in their marriage any longer. After they divorce, Clay tells Anne that he has realized he is gay.

“As a long married person myself, writing this song forced me to grapple with an interesting question: How should learning something new about your spouse — and let’s posit your spouse didn’t know either — something that goes to a core identity, affect the way you view your relationship after the fact?” says Taslitz about the re-recorded song. “In the context of Regretting Almost Everything, for example, should Clay’s revelation that he’s gay change Anne’s assessment of her marriage?”

In this new acoustic version, Ursetti performs a brand-new accompaniment that is quite different from — though just as beautiful as — Paul Staroba’s piano accompaniment on the original track.

“It’s illuminating to experience the impact a change in instrumentation has on a song,” Taslitz explains. “Is it more modern? More intimate?”

The two versions of the song also differ in that the acoustic one does not include the original introduction, which only makes sense in the context of the whole show.

“Without the introduction, the song becomes a standalone that can be performed by any cabaret artist (of a certain age)!” observes Taslitz.

The new acoustic version of How Do You Measure A Marriage? dropped on 27 October on all music streaming platforms. Check out a preview of the track below, and listen to the whole album on Spotify! You can also head to the official website to find out more.
